Pedernales, La Vega, Santiago, Espaillat, Duarte, S Puerto Plata), Muertos, Hispaniola, Ile de la Tortue (Haiti) difficilis: north-central República Dominicana. Altitudinal distribution about 300 ft. to at least 2000 ft. Type locality: Santiago de la Vega, La Vega Province, República Dominicana. anthracomus: east coast of Peninsula de Barahona, República Dominicana. Type locality: 1 km NE Paraiso, Rio Nizaito, Barahona Province, Republica Domincana diolenius: south-central and eastern República Dominicana; Isla Pascal in Bahia de Samana; presumably the subspecies at Hinche, Dépt. du Centre, Haiti. Type locality: 2 mi. (3.2 km) SE San Cristobal, San Cristobal Province, Republica Dominicana. euopter: Île de la Tortue. Type locality: Vicinity of Palmiste, Ile de la Tortue, Haiti. lycauges: all of northern Haiti. Type locality: Cap-Ha'itien, Departement du Nord, Haiti. peratus: extreme northeastern República Dominicana (absent from Peninsula de Samana). | Diagnosis | DESCRIPTION: Size moderate (SVL in males to 34 mm, in females to 33 mm); dorsals large, acute, strongly keeled, flattened, imbricate, axilla to groin 22-40; no area of middorsal granules or granular scales; ventrals cycloid, imbricate, axilla to groin 23-37; dorsal caudal scales keeled, acute, imbricate, flat-lying, ventral caudal scales smooth, cycloid, enlarged (at times only slightly) midventrally; snout acuminate, not depressed or decurved; snout scales small, broad, flat, smooth, juxtaposed; 2 postnasals; 0-3 (mode 1) internasals; gular scales usually smooth, occasionally weakly to strongly keeled; chest scales smooth; midbody scales 37~0; escutcheon with a broad and compact central area and extensions onto thighs to near underside of knee, 3-8 x 8-30. Dorsal pattern sexually dichromatic and variable; dorsum (males) pinkish gray, gray, tan, brown, usually with scattered dark brown scales giving a coarse "salt-and-pepper" effect; dark scapular patch usually absent, but if present, usually very restricted and diffusely edged; a pair of small, pale ocelli present or absent (by population); head pattern trilineate but obsolescent and usually absent; head, chin, and throat often with small to large, dark brown to black dots; throat ground-color yellow to orange; venter gray to flesh; dorsum (females) colored and patterned like males, although distinctly lineate in some populations; head with prominent, trilineate, brown pattern on buffy to tan ground; head scales dotted; scapular patch variable (by population) from relatively large, brown, black, with an associated pair of white, buffy, gray ocelli, to small with a single, included ocellus, or both patch and ocelli entirely absent; venter as in males; juveniles with more intense female pattern; iris yellow, tan, brown (from Schwartz & Henderson 1991: 487). |
