EtymologyThe species epithet, statisticus, has roots in Latin and Greek. It is the root of the English word "statistics." In the early 19th century, the word "statistics" began to refer to the collection and classification of data in general. It is this reference that Malnate & Underwood used to name the species. As they mentioned, "... inhabited by a species of Tropidonophis to which we apply the name statisticus in allusion to the fact that it was only after multivariate analysis that we became confident of its distinctness."
