VOGEL on 17 March 1997; DTU 410 (adult female) collected in Tam Chuc Ward, Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam (ca. 20.545° N, 105.798° E; altitude 200 m asl), donated by local people in August 2023. Additional specimens (n = 2) DTU 357 (adult female) with the same locality information as DTU 410. KIZ 750001 (adult female) in collected in Daxin County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. |
| Diagnosis | Diagnosis: A new species of the genus Hebius, distinguished by the following combination of characters: body cylindrical; small adult size, with maximum SVL up to 471 mm; dorsal scale rows 19–19–17, with 9–15 rows feebly keeled at midbody; ventrals 158–172; subcaudals 125–126, all paired; supralabials 8, with the 4th and 5th entering the orbit; one preocular; three postoculars; temporals 2+2 (rarely 1+2); anal plate divided. Dorsum and upper tail surface deep bluish-black or dark brown, marked with 10–22 vertical white or yellow bars; head uniformly dark brown dorsally and laterally, with two small, faint yellowish-white parietal spots. A faint whitish-brown sagittal line is present just posterior to the parietals; a thin, well-defined temporal stripe extends from the upper postocular, across the upper temporal, to the 7th and 8th supralabials and the corner of the mouth. Venter uniformly bright coral red. Maxillary teeth 25, gradually enlarging posteriorly, with the last two distinctly enlarged.
