| Etymology | Named after Dr. Ernst Rudolph Scherz (1906-1981), a chemical engineer who was educated in Berlin. He hated Nazism and in 1933 emigrated to South-West Africa (Namibia) and was Managing Director of the Karakul Breeders Association (1946-1963), karakul being a breed of sheep. Scherz accompanied Mertens on an excursion over several days and helped him collecting specimens. |
