| Comment | Synonymy partly after STEJNEGER 1907. Günther (1858: 112) proposed the new nomen Coryphodon carinatus for this species, and mentioned the nomen Coluber dhumnades as its unique synonym. He thus established a new replacement name (nomen novum) for the latter nomen. According to Article 72.7 of the Code, both nominal species have the same name-bearing type, in this case the lectotype from Chusan designated by Boulenger (1893). Type species: Coluber dhumnades CANTOR 1842: 483 is the type species of the genus Zaocys COPE 1861: 563.. |
| Etymology | STEJNEGER (1907) speculates that CANTOR might have meant to indicate a snake that is like his Coluber dhumna (= Coluber mucosus), the name of which in Hindu is said to be “dhamin”. The genus name Zaocys stems from “za” (za), a Greek prefix meaning “very”, and “okus” (okus) = “swift”. |
