DiagnosisDiagnosis - Uniform pigmentation in all the supralabials or big dark markings (covering more than 50% of the supralabial surface) more conspicuous in supralabials of the anterior half of the mouth. When these spots are present, the largest always meet under the eye. Dorsolateral blotches of the body with well defined contours, standing out from the ground coloration. Usually the last dorsolateral blotches of the trunk are divided vertically to the middle. Postcephalic stripes usually absent. When present, never with length larger than occipital length spots. Without melanism in the head. Postocular stripes well defined and keels always with the same coloration of the dorsal scales. Blotches in the interspaces between two consecutive blotches are present. Dorsolateral blotches in the trunk of variable formats from 16 to 33 (modes 21 and 22).
CommentVenomous!

Synonymy: the original spelling by Amaral 1925 was “mattogrossensis”. Note that he also spelled the state in the type locality “Matto-Grosso”. The correct name is Mato Grosso, so it should be matogrossensis but the original spelling needs to be retained.

Distribution: Speciments from Peru were previously called B. neuwiedi, they are not considered as B. matogrossensis; hence, this species occurs in Peru because of taxonomic changes suggested by DA SILVA & RODRIGUES 2008. Not in Paraguay fide Cacciali et al. 2016. See map in Nogueira et al. 2019.
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.
