Type locality: Koolpin Gorge, South Alligator River (13° 28’ S, 132° 38’ E).  
Reproductionoviparous. 
TypesHolotype: NTM 16010, adult female 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: see walloyarrina. 
CommentHabitat: freshwater (rivers, swamps)

Synonymy: Chelodina walloyarrina was not listed by COGGER 2014 and probably considered as a synonym of Chelodina burrungandjii by him but more recently considered as a valid species.

Hybridization: C. rugosa has hybrids with both C. burrungandjii and C. canni, including 3 way hybrids (is F1 hybrids breed with a 3rd species). (Scott Thompson, on Taxacom, 28 May 2024) 
EtymologyNamed after the proper noun Burrungandji used by the Gagadju people of the western Arnhem Land region (Gundjeihmi language) to distinguish the turtle from all other turtles in the region (Thomson et al. 2000).
