DiagnosisDiagnosis: Differs from all other species in the following combination of characters: rostral sutures converging on dorsum of snout to form median suture in younger specimens but these reduced to remnant grooves at edges of rostral pad or lost entirely in older specimens; midbody scale rows 18-19, and subcaudals 59-61 (Greer 1985: 151).

CommentSome specimens formerly considered as being D. smithi have been described as D. kondaoensis by Honda et al. (2001). 
EtymologyNamed after Malcolm A. Smith (1875-1958), British physician and herpetologist. See Tennison et al. 1959 for a biography and bibliography.
