Diagnosis | Diagnosis: A large species of Amphiesma, SVL 454-752 mm (x̅ = 597 mm) for 26 adult males, 4655-883 mm (x̅ = 646 mm) for 54 adult females; VT [ventral scales] 167-183 in males, 166-183 in females; SC 112-130 in both males and females; ground colour of head black or dark greyish tan; single light V- or Y-shaped marking on neck; several light vertical streaks, each of one and a half to three scales' width and lacking black edges, on each side of anterior 1/3 to 1/2 of body; sulcus spermaticus simple, having flat spinose border on sylindrical portion of hemipenis and extending to distal tip of left apical lobe; W chromosome submetacentric, largest microchromosome (autosome pair 7) metacentric; reproductive mode oviparous. Comment | Some subspecies of A. pryeri have been elevated to full species status, e.g. A.p.ishigakiense. |
