Additional details (2192 characters) are available for collaborators and contributors. Please contact us for details.
CommentDistribution: Apparently absent from most of Melanesia and Micronesia.
Occurrence in Brazil and Peru is probably due to specimens with incorrect locality data. H. garnotii was probably present in Hawaii before the arrival of Europeans (fide McKeown 1996). Reports from the Mariana Islands probably represent H. frenatus (G. Rodda, pers. comm.).

Synonymy: "Hemidactylus peruvianus Wiegmann is a senior subjective synonym of H. garnotii. We agree with Kluge & Eckardt (1969) that use of this name would threaten stability. Although perhaps not technically a nomen oblitum, we believe that the name should be supressed whenever it is considered a synonym of H. garnotii. At least some Philippine populations formerly attributed to this species are in fact referable to H. stejnegeri (Ota & Hikida 1989b). All references to H. garnotii in the Philippines should be regarded as provisional pending further investigation of this issue." (from Bauer 1994)
EtymologyNamed after Prosper Garnot (1794-1838), French naval surgeon, naturalist, and collector who worked with Lesson. They were both on board La Coquille during its circumnavigation (1822-1825).
