Etymology | Named after Greek στικτός (= spotted) and γαστήρ (= belly), an obvious reference to the light venter that usually bears discreet brown or black dots. L. stictigaster astictus is from the Greek α- (= not) and στικτός (= spotted), an obvious allusion to the lack of ventral dots in this subspecies. L. stictigaster celeustes is from the Greek κελευστής, translation into Greek of the name of the type locality (Contramaestre = boatswain). L. stictigaster exotheotus is from the Greek εξωθεο (= thrust or forced out) that was Latinized and provided with the Latin adjectival suffix -otus (= having the nature of or pertaining to), presumably an allusion to this subspecies occurring on the Isle of Pines (= Isla de la Juventud) away from the main island of Cuba. L. stictigaster gibarensis is an obvious reference to the type locality (Gibara, Oriente Province, Cuba). L. stictigaster lipomator is from the Greek (= orphan), an allusion to the isolated position of this subspecies in central Cuba. L. stictigaster lucianus is a reference to the type locality of this subspecies (Playa Santa Lucía, Camagüey Province, Cuba). L. stictigaster naranjoi is a patronym honoring Telmo Naranjo Casadevall, collector of the holotype. L. stictigaster ophiplacodes is from the Greek όφις (= serpent) and πλακώδες (= plain-dweller), a reference to the serpentine savannas of central Camagüey. L. stictigaster parasphex is from the Greek παρα- (= alongside of) and σφήξ (= wasp) in reference to the abundant wasp population that makes collecting on Cayo Sabinal somewhat hazardous. L. stictigaster septentrionalis is from the Latin (= northern), presumably an allusion to the distribution of this subspecies on three northerly cays in the Archipiélago Sabana-Camagüey. L. stictigaster sierrae is an allusion to the local name ‘iguana de la sierra’ and this subspecies’ association with mountains, hence also named after the type locality, the Sierra de los Ôrganos and Sierra del Rosario. |
