DiagnosisDiagnosis: “This species differs from all known Chilean forms in having: a) coarse dorsal scales with a semirounded edge and a light keel, a character shared in part with the species of the genus Velosaura(Nuñez and Yañez, 1983-1984), but in L. puritamensis the scales are narrower; b) a dark venter spotted with white scales, shared with patagonian Liolaemus, but the latter do not exhibit the same spotted pattern; c) neck wider than head; d) dorsal scales, even though triangular with a free point, interspersed with various minute scales; and e) sides of body with smaller, rounder, more conical, protuberant scales than those of dorsum, also with interspersed minute scales.” (NÚÑEZ & FOX 1989) 
CommentSynonymy: NUNEZ 1992 synonymized L. puritamensis with L. dorbignyi, but resurrected by  PINCHEIRA-DONOSO & NÚÑEZ 2005, a decision accepted by LOBO et al. 2010. Troncoso-Palacio (2014) concludes that Liolaemus puritamensis Nuñez and Fox, 1989 and L. filiorum Pincheira-Donoso & Ramirez, 2005 are conspecific. However, this was challenged by Pincheira-Donoso 2014 and rebutted again by Troncoso-Palacios 2015.

Common name (filiorum): S: Lagartija de los hijos; E: Son’s lizard. 
EtymologyNamed after the nearby springs of Baños de Puritama.

L. filiorum was named after Ramirez-Leyton’s sons, Marcelo and Alvaro. Latin “filius” = son.
