DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Large snakes, with head distinct from the more or less cylindrical body; eye large to very large, the pupil round; scales in 17-15 rows (more rarely 18, 16, 14); subcaudals, paired; apical pits present; normally two or three loreals; a presubocular usually present. Maxillary teeth, 20 to 28, increasing slightly in length and thickness posteriorly. (Taylor 1965: 730)]

CommentType species: Coluber blumenbachii MERREM 1820 is the type species of the genus Ptyas FITZINGER 1843. According to WALLACH et al. 2014: 615, Coluber mucosus LINNAEUS 1758 is the type species of Ptyas.

Distribution: Possibly in Bhutan (Lenz 2012). For a map see Sindaco et al. 2013.

Habitat: partly arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018).

EtymologyNamed after Latin “mucosus” = slimy, based on the popular notion that snakes are slimy.

The genus was named after Greek “ptyas” = spitter. The gender of Ptyas is feminine (David & Das 2004).
