Diagnosis | Diagnosis: A moderately large Sceloporus, maximum snout-vent measurement 95 mm.; one canthal (the first entirely absent); supra-oculars moderate in size; sometimes one or two very small scales segmented off from outer parts of supraoculars; one complete and one or two incomplete series of scales between supraoculars and super-ciliaries; one or two posterior supraoculars frequently in contact with median head scales; frontal ridges distinct; dorsal scales 31 to 38; a black shoulder patch in males, none in females; females with two series of dark spots down back; males uniform greenish olive above (Smith 1939: 63). Etymology | The Latin lunaei refers to a Dr. Luna who collected the type. The Latinized surname Luna becomes lunae in the genitive case, even though Luna was a man. There is no provision in the Code for an extra terminal -i (Art. 31 of the Code, ICZN, 1999). |
