melanorhinus: Mexico (Oaxaca). Type locality: Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. Restricted to Tehuantepec (City) by SMITH & TAYLOR 1950.

calligaster: Mexico (Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero). Type Locality: Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico.

stuarti: Type Locality: Finca Caníbal, about 3000 ft. elevation, Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

stuarti: Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala.

DiagnosisDiagnosis: A large species, maximum snout-vent measurement
105 mm.; dorsal scales much larger than lateral scales, 27 to 33 from
occiput to base of tail; ventral scales 44 to 54, average 49.5; femoral
pores 17 to 24, average 19.5; four or five supraoculars, the last in con-
tact with median head scales, all separated from superciliaries by a
single row of small scales; outer row of labiomentals separated from
mental; two dark bars across snout and top of head; females with
large, more or less square blotches on back; sides of belly blue in
males, the center of abdomen orange. (Smith 1939: 82)

Comment 
EtymologyNamed after the Greek melanos, "black," and rhinos, "nose," refer to the black snout.

calligaster: The name is from the Greek words kalos, "beautiful," and gaster, "belly," and refers to the colorful orange venter in males.

stuarti: The genitive singular word honors L. C. Stuart, who contributed more than any other to the understanding of the herpetofauna of Guatemala.
