CommentType species: Sceloporus torquatus is the type species of the genus Sceloporus Wiegmann, 1828. For a recent phylogeny of the genus see WIENS et al. 2010.

Subspecies: Sceloporus torquatus minor and other subspecies are now treated as full species or as a subpsecies of S. jarrovii.

Synonymy: Agama torquata PEALE & GREEN 1830 has been described independently and given (serendipitoulsy!) the same species epithet. The name is thus a junior secondary homonym and objective synonym of Sceloporus torquatus Wiegmann (1828).

Sympatry: Circular sympatry may occur between S. t. mikeprestoni, derived from S. t. torquatus, and S. t. binocularis, derived from S. t. melanogaster. Additional field work in the hiatus between the ranges of S. t. mikeprestoni and S. t. binocularis is necessary to resolve this problem (BELL et al. 2003) but see CAMPILLO-GARCÍA et al. 2021 for an update.

Types: One of the syntypes of Sceloporus ferrariperezi COPE (USNM 9880) is actually Sceloporus spinosus according to SMITH & TAYLOR 1950. One of the syntypes of S. torquatus, ZMB 628 was determined to be Sceloporus aureolus Smith, 1942 by Campillo-Garcia et al. 2021. These authors also re-determined the specimen ZMB 630, another syntype of S. torquatus, as S. t. melanogaster by having undivided supraocular scales, 30 dorsal scales, 41 ventral scales, diffuse dark nuchal collar interrupted by dorsolateral light bands or marks, as well as a series of dark irregular spots that fade over the base of the tail. Finally, they also found that specimen ENCB 5756, a paratype of S. t. mikeprestoni, actually pertains to Sceloporus minor Cope, 1885. This specimen has divided supraocular scales, 36 dorsal scales, 40 scales around the body, and 44 ventral scales.

Group: S. torquatus group. The torquatus group consists of 10 species: S. binocularis, S. bulleri, S. geminus, S. huichol, S. insignis, S. jarrovii, S. madrensis, S. melanogaster, S. mikeprestoni and S. torquatus, fide Campillo-García et al. 2023.

Key: Campillo-García et al. 2023: 11 provide a key to the 10 species of the S. torquatus group.

Distribution: Not in Querétaro fide Tepos-Ramírez et al. (2023). Not in Nayarit, where it is replaced by S. huichol fide LOC-BARRAGÁN et al. 2024 (checklist Nayarit), but previously reported from Nayarit (HR 30: 111). 
EtymologyNamed after the Latin torquatus, "adorned with a necklace or collar", refers to the conspicuous, light-bordered black collar in these lizards.

The genus was named after Greek scelos (σκέλος), leg + Greek poros (πόρος), pore; crossing-place. ["…pori femorales magni…"].
