TypesHolotype: lost, was ZMB 5476 (lost fide BAUER et al. 1995) 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Dorsal scales homogeneous, imbricate, weakly keeled (under magnification) 51 around middle of body; subdigitallamellae distinctly tricarinate; first pair of chin shields (postmentals) in broad contact, second pair small, separated by three scales; hind limb reaches nearly to axilla. (Diagnosis based on Iranian specimens only, fide Anderson 1999: 196). 
CommentSimilar species: Tropiocolotes naybandensis, T. steudneri, T. nattereri. Pictures of T. steudneri at http://herpetology.com/1phs31.html are in fact T. nattereri (Pierre Andre Crochet, pers. comm.).

Distribution: T. steudneri appears not to occur in Israel. All records up to know are based on misidentification of T. nattereri. SINDACO & JEREMČENKO 2008 (map 78) show one (dubious ?) record from Iran. Phylogenetic results of Machado et al. (2021) grouped Tropiocolotes steudneri from Niger and southern Algeria (Tassili n’Ajjer and Ahaggar) within Tropiocolotes nubicus Baha El Din, 1999, while T. steudneri specimens were only found east of the Nile River (fide Rachid Rouag, pers. comm., 8 May 2024). See map in Machado et al. 2020 (Fig. 1). 
EtymologyNamed after Hermann Steudner (1832-1863), naturalist and explorer.
