Type locality: S end of Lake Hubert, N. T.

TypesHolotype: SAMA R3222 (formerly USNM 128385), male, S end of Lake Hubert, NT, collected Australian-American Arnhem Land Expedition, iv-xi.1948. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A moderately large, dark, rock monitor (up to 102 cm long) with tail not strongly compressed; subdigital, palmar and plantar tubercles large and black; upper surfaces usually dark with little pattern. Distinguishable from V. glauerti by having distal two-fifths of tail unbanded whitish (rather than most of tail boldly banded with black and white). (Storr 1980)

Etymologythe name refers to the black pads on the surface of the feet.
