DistributionLesser Antilles: Martinique. All subspecies described by LAZELL 1972 occur on Martinique.

roquet: southern and central Martinique, except for extreme southeastern part; Rocher de Diamant; intergrades with A. r. caracoli and A. r. salinei; specimens from Trinité and Ilet St.-Aubin combine characters of A. r. roquet, A. r. majoîgris, and A. r. caracoli. Type locality: None given. “Fort-de-France, Martinique” designated by Lazell 1972 (to neotype).

caracoli: eastern end of Presqu'île de la Caravelle.

majoigris: northeastern coast from Derrière Morne ta Le Lorain.

salinei: extreme southeastern Martinique; Île Cabrits, Ilet Chevalier.

summus: mountains of northern Martinique from Montagne Pelée south ta Absalon above Fort-de-France.

zebrilus: north-cental west coast from Case Pilote north ta Le Trou, south of St.-Pierre.

CommentSynonymy: after Lazell 1972.

Distribution: not in Venezuela; reports from Venezuela are based on A. extremus, formerly, A. roquet extremus, a species that has been introduced to Venezuela [RIVAS et al. 2012]. Reported from other islands too (Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Guiana) but now restricted to Martinique (Creer et al. 2001).

Nomenclature: SAVAGE (2003) suggested to reject Lacepède’s (1788) “Histoire Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares” as a non-binominal work (Case 3226; Bull. Zool. Nom. 60 (2)). This application has been successful. The ICZN (2005) has ruled that Lacepède’s (1788) work (and all subsequent editions of this work) are rejected as an unavailable, non-binominal work.

Species groups: Dactyloa roquet species group (fide NICHOLSON et al. 2012). Prates et al. 2019 redefined the roquet series as follows: The largest crown clade that includes A. roquet and excludes A. aequatorialis, A. heterodermus, A. nasofrontalis, A. latifrons, and A. punctatus.
EtymologyThe name is a French vernacular name, a Lizard from Martinique; noun in apposition (invariable), masculine (Fretey 2023).

The nomen majolgris is Lazell’s (1972: 89) own ‘latinization’ for the Creole ‘grey throat fan.’ (Fretey 2023).

A. r. caracoli is a French name, ‘Pointe Caracoli’, Caravelle peninsula, Martinique (Fretey 2023).

A. r. saliniei is a Latin neologism, latinization for ‘Pointe des Salines’, Martinique(Fretey 2023).

A. r. summus is named after Latin summus, a, um, ‘the highest’; this taxon is found on the Montagne Pelée (Fretey 2023).

A. r. zebrilus may be an arbitrary combination of letters. There is no known etymology (Fretey 2023).
