EtymologyThe specific epithet is a patronym honoring “our friend and colleague Anthony (Tony) Hume Whitaker (1944-2014), indefatigable British-born Kiwi herpetologist and wildlife biologist who left us too soon. Tony and his wife Viv contributed greatly to New Caledonian herpetology, particularly that of the far north, where their tireless efforts turned up many novel lizards, including this species. Tony was a co-author of 27 New Caledonian lizard species, including three in the genus Bavayia.”
