DistributionUSA (introduced to Florida and southern Texas)

W Mexico (from just north of Culiacan, Sinaloa, southward to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in SE Oaxaca, Isla de las Tres Marias, west of Nayarit, Durango, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Morelos, Chiapas, Guerrero, Puebla, México, Aguascalientes)

Type locality: Restricted to Colima, Colima.

brachylopha: Mexico (Nayarit, Sinaloa, N Jalisco); Type locality: Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: ZMB 574, male
Syntypes: USNM 7180-7183 [brachylopha]
Holotype: USNM 18967 [parkeri]
Syntypes: USNM 24708-24709 [brevirostris]
DiagnosisDiagnosis (brachylopha): Bailey 1928: 22
CommentDistribution: Erroneously reported from Guanajuato (SMITH & TAYLOR 1950: 74). The species introduced to Florida may be in fact C. similis (see TOWNSEND et al. 2003).

Synonymy: Smith & Taylor (1950) lumped C. brachylopha, C. brevirostris and C. parkeri with C. pectinata and restricted the name C. acanthura for iguanas from the Gulf of Mexico area. Zarza et al. 2019 suggested to resurrect Ctenosaura brachylopha for the northern populations of C. pectinata, although it seems that they investigated only 4 specimens (or specimens from 4 localities), one of which (from further south) appeared to be a hybrid of brachylopha and pectinata.
