Diagnosis 
CommentOTANI et al. (1995) reported hybrids between M. japonica and Cuora flavomarginata and between Geoemyda japonica and C. flavomarginata.

This species is classified as “vulnerable” in Japan (Ota 2000).

Karyotype: 2n = 52 (Nakamura 1949) 
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.
