EtymologyNamed after Dr. Albert William Christian Theodore Herre (1868-1962), American ichthyologist, ecologist, botanist, and lichenologist. He received a PhD (1908) in ichthyology at Stanford and later worked in the Philippines as Chief of Fisheries, Bureau of Science, Manila (1919-1928), but also had other positions in the US.

L. h. medianus refers to the fact that the subspecies is somewhat in between typical herrei and aurolineatus in scale counts as well as area occupied.
