CommentType species: Phoxophrys tuberculata HUBRECHT 1881 is the type species of the genus Phoxophrys HUBRECHT 1881.
EtymologyHubrecht (1881) did not discuss the derivation of the name Phoxophrys. This feminine Latin noun in the nominative singular contains the Greek prefix phoxos meaning pointed or peaked and noun ophrys meaning eyebrow. The name likely refers to the arched, triangular supercilium of Ph. tuberculata and inspired coining of the common English name ‘‘eyebrow lizard,’’ as frequently used by various websites and in some recent treatments of the Agamidae (Murphy and Hanken 2018, Harvey et al. 2019).
