DistributionNW/WC Spain, N/W/EC Portugal (Berlenga Island, westnorth-west of Cape Carvoeiro)

bocagei: from NW Iberia (e.g. W Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia,
north of Portugal) to the Portuguese region of Extremadura, north of Lisbon (Galán, 1986; Pérez-Mellado, 1986, 1997, 1998). The southern range of P. b. bocagei was re-established south of the river Douro, northern Portugal

Type locality: La Coruña, NE Spain (restricted by MERTENS & MÜLLER 1928)
Reproductionoviparous
TypesType: BMNH 1946.9.1.23 (and possibly additional specimens).
(Perez-Mellado 1986: 15)
CommentSubspecies: Podarcis bocagei carbonelli PEREZ MELLADO 1981 has been elevated to full species status (Sá-Sousa & Harris, 2002). See also P. guadarramae.

Synonymy: partly after PÉREZ-MELLADO 1981. Harris & Sá-Sousa (2001) showed that Podarcis bocagei berlengensis VICENTE, 1985 is indistinguishable from P. carbonelli and thus relegated the first to the latter.

According to Sa-Sousa (2002) males of bocagei usually have thick black reticulations, whereas the carbonelli ones have thin diffused reticulations or speckled patterns. Males of both species have bright green dorsal colorations during the mating period (e.g. MBC, FKC). Only the males of carbonelli typically show blue spots on the outer ventral scales (BGS). The bellies of bocagei are coloured (VTC), while carbonelli have whitish bellies. The two species also present differences in terms of scalation traits (Kaliontzopoulou et al. 2005). Females have significantly less reticulated flanks (FKD), less pigmentationon the body (e.g. CPP, VTP, BGS) and less green patterns (MBC, FKC), than respective males. Females generally attain a smaller body size, having longer trunks, but smaller heads and shorter limbs than males (Kaliontzopoulou et al. 2007, 2008, 2010a, 2010b).

Variation: Podarcis hispanica is a genetically (Kaliontzopoulou et al. 2011) and morphologically (Carretero 2008; Kaliontzopoulou et al. 2012) very diverse species. In fact, P. bocagei and P. (bocagei) carbonelli are nested within the P. hispanica clade based on DNA sequence data (PINHO et al. 2005; Kaliontzopoulou et al. 2011).

Distribution: see map in Caeiro-Dias et al. 2018.
EtymologyNamed after José Vicente Barboza du Bocage (Funchal, 1823-Lisboa, 1907), Portugese naturalist. See Gamito-Marques 2017 for biographical etails.
