Diagnosis
CommentTaxonomy: Synonymy partly after KLUGE 1993. Ptyodactylus guttatus HEYDEN 1827 and Gecko maculatus SCHINZ 1833 are listed as synonyms of P. h. hasselquistii by WERMUTH 1965 but guttatus is now treated as a valid species with maculatus as a synonym. Ptyodactylus hasselquistii ragazzii has been elevated to species status. P. h. krameri has been described based on a single specimen. The subspecies was synonymized with Ptyodactylus hasselquistii by Tamar & Moravec 2022.

Distribution: Erroneously reported from Mauritania by WELCH 1982 (fide JOGER 1983). Presence in Iran seems to be unconfirmed (Anderson 1999: 178, Lizards of Iran). Not in Iran fide Werner 2006 and ŠMÍD et al. 2014. Schmidt (1955), reported Ptyodactylus hasselquistii from western Iran but Werner 2006 identified this specimen as belonging to Asaccus. Not in Libya fide Bauer et al. 2017. Not in Oman (Carranza et al. 2018). Not in the UAE fide Burriel-Carranza et al. 2019 where it is replaced by P. orlovi and P. ruusaljibalicus. Not listed at all for West Africa by Trape et al. 2012. Not in Morocco (Martínez et al. 2019, and pers. comm. 18 Jan 2021). See Bar et al. 2021 for a map.

Type species: Gecko lobatus GEOFFROY 1827 is the type species of the genus Ptyodactylus GOLDFUSS 1820 (based on a typo, originally Styodactylus GOLDFUSS 1820, fide WERMUTH 1965: 155). Swainson 1839 listed the genus Ptilodactylus, apparently a typo for Ptyodactylus as suggfested by his list on p. 371. See also Frétey & Dubois 2019 for the authorship of Ptyodactylus.
Etymologynamed after Frederic Hasselquist, Swedish physician and explorer and student of Carl von Linné (Adler 2012).
