Type Locality: 63 km N Toluca, México, Mexico.  
Reproduction“almost viviparous” by laying eggs that contain well-developed “embryos” which hatch after 12-14 days. Blackburn 1994 and others called this species “oviparous”.<br />subniger: viviparous, aeneus: oviparous (Ramirez-Bautista et al. 2017).

Diagnosis 
CommentSubspecies: S. aeneus subniger is variably considered as full species or as subspecies of S. aeneus.

Distribution: Not in Guanajuato fide Leyte-Manrique et al. 2022. Not in Querétaro fide Tepos-Ramírez et al. (2023). 
EtymologyThe Latin sub, "under," and niger, "black", refer to the prominent black gular bars and reduction of ventral melanism-diagnostic features separating this species from Sceloporus aeneus.
