DistributionColombia (Cauca, Nariño), Ecuador (Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Imbabura, Pichincha, Tungurahua), elevation 2135-3890 m.

Type locality: Guayaquil, Sarayacu, Western Ecuador, and Colombia [Provincia Guayas and Pastaza]. Restricted to San Antonio de Pichincha, 2500 m, Provincia Pichincha, by FRITTS 1974.

DiagnosisDiagnosis: TORRES-CARVAJAL 2007. 
CommentStenocercus guentheri might be a species complex because of the considerable geographic variation.

Belongs to the clade Boreomegalepis (fide TORRES-CARVAJAL 2006). 
EtymologyNamed after Albert Günther (1830-1914), German-born zoologist at the British Museum.
