Type locality: Isla Bonacca (= Isla de Guanaja), Islas de la Bahia, Honduras.

TypesHolotype: BMNH 94.12.28.23, adult female, probably collected by G. F. Gaumer, date of collection unknown. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A Tantilla with 7 supralabials, 161 ventrals and 65 caudals (9); a broad, light nuchal collar (interrupted medially and laterally); a middorsal light line, one and two half scale rows wide on body, extending most of length of tail; a light lateral line on adjacent halves of third and fourth scale row, ending at base of tail; venter and lower edge of first scalerow light. (SMITH & WILLIAMS 1966) 
CommentTantilla tritaeniata has been resurrected from synonymy with Tantilla taeniata by WILSON & MCCRANIE 1999. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin tri-, consisting of, having, etc., three of the things named + Latin taenia, ribbon, tape, band + Latin -atus, having the nature of. [“...a middorsal light line, one and two half scale rows wide on body, extending most of length of tail; a light lateral line on adjacent halves of third and fourth scale row, ending at base of tail...”].
