Distribution | Republic of South Africa |
Reproduction | oviparous |
Types | Holotype: lost (was MNHN); additional material: PEM Holotype: PEM R9550 [bilineatus] |
Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Hewitt (1926) distinguished his new species T. bilineatus from T. tetradactylus by the following characters: (1) The nostril is border by only three nasal scales ....the first upper labial does not enter the nostril, as is the case in T. tetradactylus. (2) The frontal scute is broader (twice as long as broad; 2.5 times as long as broad, or even longer, in T. tetradactylus. (3) Third finger considerably longer than second; in T. tetradactylus it is subequal or only slightly longer. (4) Hind-limbs relatively longer (extending to 9th row of caudal scales); in T. tetradactylus only extending as far as 6-7th row. (5) A conspicuous striped colour pattern. However, Branch 1990 could not confirm these differences and synonymized the two species. |
Comment | Type species: Tetradactylus chalcidicus MERREM 1820 is the type species of the genus Tetradactylus MERREM 1820. Synonymy: new material examined by Branch 1990 shows wide variability in the supposedly 'diagnostic' characters between T. tetradactylus and T. bilineatus. The many new localities also fill in much of the gap between the two 'races', hence Branch 1990 synonymized Tetradactylus bilineatus with Tetradactylus tetradactylus. |
