Type species: Voeltzkowia mira BOETTGER 1893 is the type species of the genus Voeltzkowia BOETTGER 1893: 116. 
EtymologyThe species epithet mirus, mira is a Latin adjective, meaning unexpected finding or surprise, apparently referring to the unexpected discovery of this species.

The genus was named after Dr. A. Voeltzkow, Berlin, who provided (collected?) the types.
