DistributionSE Australia (New South Wales, Victoria, Capital Territory: scattered populations in the high country in southeastern and the ACT into eastern Victoria. It the north it occurs only about 1400 m elevation and in the south above 900 m)

Type locality: Mt. Gingera, Brindabella Ranges, ACT, 35° 35’ S, 148° 46’ E.

TypesHolotype: SAMA R37767; paratypes: SAMA, 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A member of the Egernia whitii species group, very similar in most respects to E. whitii, but distinguished by the presence of a blackish upper lateral stripe usually overlain by two or three roughly longitudinal series of small white or cream dots. Spotted back pattern absent except in some juveniles. Dorsal patterning in adults absent or restricted to two paravertebral zones marbled with brown. (Donnellan et al. 2002) 
CommentRock-dwelling.

This species exhibit colour pattern polymorphism (Chapple et al. 2008). 
EtymologyNamed after the mountain area where the species is found (Latin “montanus”, meaning “pertaining to mountains).
