Diagnosis | Diagnosis. A medium sized Phelsuma, 48 mm maximum snout-vent length, with the. subcaudals not significantly enlarged transversally, nostril placed above or just behind the suture between the rostral and first upper labial, no median cleft on the rostral, one intersupranasal granule, eight (rarely seven) dorsal scale rows per tail whorl, keeled dorsal scales at tail base, some weakly keeled dorsolateral scales, keeled ventral scales, 29 femoral pores in the fully mature male. There is only one other species, Phelsuma cepediana, that has the nostril positioned above the suture between the rostral and first upper labial, and keeled ventral scales. This species has the following characters that differ from Phelsuma antanosy: the presence of a median suture (cleft) in the rostral in P. cepediana (absent in P. antanosy), dorsal scales at the tail base of P. cepediana smooth (keeled in P. antanosy), 18-25 femoral pores in P. cepediana (29 in mature P. antanosy), two or three intersupranasal granules in P. cepediana (P. antanosy has just one intersupranasal). Some specimens of Phelsuma antanosy have the nostril centered behind the suture between the rostral and first labial, which is the condition found in all other Madagascan species of Phelsuma. These specimens of P. antanosy are similar to the "lineata" group (P. lineata, P. minuthi, P. pusilla, P. quadriocellata) in that they have keeled ventral scales and weakly keeled dorsal scales. However P. antanosy lacks the characteristic bold dark lateral stripe or ocelli which are present on the flanks of P. lineata, P. minuthi, P. pusilla, and P. quadriocellata. All four of these species may have red spots on the lower back, but these are usually irregular or partly fused spots, and they do not form the three longitudinal lines seen in some individuals of P. antanosy. The reticulated pattern on the dorsal anterior half of the body of P. antanosy is unknown in the "lineata" group of Phelsuma, and probably is unique to the new species. (Raxworthy & Nussbaum 1993) |
Comment | Member of the Phelsuma laticauda (phenetic) group (GLAW, VENCES & ZIEGLER 1999). |
