Type locality: unknown, likely Amboasary, Madagascar (Henkel and Schmidt 2000).  
Reproductionovovivparous 
TypesHolotype: lost, formerly MSNM (Museo Civico di Storia Naturale, Milano), but destroyed in 1943 fide Reynolds & Henderson 2018. 
Diagnosis 
CommentDistribution: Reports from Reunion are probably erroneous (WALLACH & GLAW 2009, Vences & Glaw 2003).

Acrantophis dumerili may be a complex of two species (OROZCO-TERWENGEL et al 2008).

Type species: Acrantophis dumerili JAN 1860 is the type species of the genus Acrantophis JAN 1860. 
EtymologyNamed after Greek “akrantos” = useless or lazy, and Greek” ophis = snake. May have been chosen because the species was found in a state of no or low activity. The species is named after French herpetologist A.M.C. Duméril.
