CommentSubspecies: Agama planiceps mwanzae is now considered a separate species, A. mwanzae.

Synonymy: Marques et al. 2018: 292 say that a detailed review of the species group is currently being prepared, including a review of planiceps vs. schacki, but to our knowledge nothing had been published by Jan. 2025.

Distribution: see maps in Kissling et al. 2016: Fig. 1 and Marques et al. 2018: 291 (planiceps) and p. 292 (schacki) (Angola). Not in Cameroon (P. Wagner, pers. comm.)

A. planiceps exhibits a striking sexual dimorphism: males have bright red head and a dark blue body while females have a head with light spots on dark base color (see back cover of Iguana-Rundschreiben 1/2006).
EtymologyNamed after Latin “planus” = flat and “-ceps” head.
