Type locality: unknown. Designated as “South Africa” by FITZSIMONS 1943.

Holotype: BMNH 1946.8.27.94-96 (95.10.19.57) [microterolepis]
Lectotype: ZMB 42887 (designated by DENZER et al. 1997), ad. Ex., "Mpome", leg. A. & M. Krothe. Paralectotype: ZMB 42888, juv. Ex., same as lectotype; Terra typica: Mpome, Transvaal [micropholis] 
Diagnosis 
CommentSynonymy partly after WERMUTH 1967 and P. Wagner (pers. comm., 24 Oct 2011).

Subspecies: MATTHEE & FLEMMING 2002 and WAGNER et al. (2009) elevated A. a. knobeli to full species status. 
EtymologyNamed after its color, Latin “ater, atra, atrum” = dark or black.
