TypesLectotype: SMF 10118 (formerly 4357b)
Diagnosis
CommentSynonymy after WERMUTH 1967. Denzer argued that the correct name for this taxon has to be A. bibronii: the ICZN rendered Fitzinger’s name Trapelus (Psammorrhoa) bibronii unavailable, so that the replacement name Agama impalearis became an unjustified nomen substitutum. Therefore, the valid name for the North African rock agama is Agama bibronii A. Duméril in Duméril & Duméril, 1851.

Illustration in BARTS & WILMS 2003.

Populations from Malawi, Niger, Chad, Mali, SW Libya belong to A. agama (IUCN 2007, SINDACO & JEREMCENKO 2008)
EtymologyNamed after Gabriel Bibron (1806-1848), French zoologist.
