Diagnosis 
CommentHolbrook (1842) emended Daudin's `mississipiensis' to the present spelling, and that emendation was declared valid by the Intl. Comm. Zool. Nomen., see Hemming 1958, Opin. Declar. Rendered Intl. Comm. Zool. Nomen. 1F(F.8):87-126 (after King & Burke 1989).

Genetics: This is one of 6 reptile species whose genome is currently being sequenced by the Genome10K project.

Type species: Crocodilus lucius CUVIER 1807 is the type species of the genus Alligator CUVIER 1807. Alligator is the type species of the family Alligatoridae Gray 1844:195. 
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.

The genus name is derived from Spanish el = “the” and lagarto = a lizard.
