DiagnosisDiagnosis. Ptychoglossus vallensis, like P. stenolepis of the same region, has widely separated prefrontal scales, a long body, and narrow dorsal scales as indicated by the high counts of scales around midbody (36-44). It can be distinguished from P. stenolepis by a flatter side profile, moderate-size lateral neck scales (smaller than nuchals), hexagonal dorsal scales obtusely to acutely pointed behind, undivided posterior chin shields, presence of preanal pores, dorsally separated frontal and premaxillary bones, and 17 (not eight) hemipenial flounces. Ptychoglossus gorgonae is a similar, lower elevation species, with prefrontals in broad contact and a median marginal preanal scale. The arrangement of broad symmetrical flaps across the tip of the hemipenis is a unique feature of P. vallensis. (Harris 1994)
