Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: NRM (Stockholm)
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus). Solid-toothed snakes with keeled scales on the body in 19 dorsal rows mid-body, anal usually divided, and all subcaudals divided. Everted hemipenis is Y shape with simple sulcus (from Guo et al. 2014).
Description: “Eye moderate. Rostral twice as broad as deep, just visible from above; internasals much narrowed anteriorly, as long as broad or a little longer, nearly as long as the prefrontals frontal once and two thirds to twice as long as broad, longer than its distance from the end of the snout, as long as the parietals; loreal as long as deep or deeper one prae- and three postoculars; temporals 1+1 or 1+2; eight upper labials normally, third, fourth, and fifth entering the eye; five or six lower labials in contact with the anterior chin-shields, which are shorter than the posterior. Scales in 19 rows, strongly keeled, outer row smooth. Ventral 120-161; anal divided : subcaudals 50-89. Greenish or brownish olive, with more or less distinct black spots or reticulated cross bars intersected by two yellow longitudinal bands, which are best marked posteriorly; præ- and postoculars yellowish lower surfaces white, usually with a black spot on each side of each ventral.” (Boulenger 1893: 253)
CommentSynonymy partly after STEJNEGER 1907. Kaiser et al. 2013 considered the generic names Asianatrix Hoser 2012, Elliottnatrix Hoser 2012, Greernatrix Hoser 2012, Sundanatrix Hoser 2012, Wellingtonnatrix Hoser 2012, Wellsnatrix Hoser 2012 invalid and rejected their use instead of Amphiesma.

Type species: Coluber stolatus LINNAEUS 1758 is the type species of the genus Amphiesma DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854 (see DAVID et al. 1998).

Guo et al. 2014 restricted the genus Amphiesma to A. stolatum, moving all the other species to Hebius and Herpetoreas.

Distribution: Has been reported from the Andaman Islands by SMITH 1943 and others although no voucher specimens exist. The existence on these islands is therefore questionable (Das 1999). STUEBING (1991) reported this species from Borneo but this appears to be based on a misidentification according to MALKMUS et al. (2002). For a map see Sindaco et al. 2013.

Behavior: diurnal.
