Etymology | Named after Dr. Axel Adolph Olsson (1889-1977), a paleontologist and malacologist who collected fossil crustacean. A. o. alienus was named after Latin alienus (estranged), in reference to the remote area occupied by this subspecies” (Schwartz 1981:11). A. o. domingonis was named after Santo Domingo; the name is a third declension noun, and domingonis is genitive singular. A. o. extentus was named after Latin extentus for "stretched out" in allusion to the wide distribution of this subspecies” (Schwartz 1981: 14). A. o. ferrugicauda was named after Latin, from ferrugo (rust) and cauda (tail) in reference to the striking tail color of this population” (Schwartz 1981: 10) A. o. insulanus was named after Latin insulanus (islander), in reference to the occurrence of this subspecies on Ile de la Gonave, the major Hispaniolan satellite island” (Schwartz 1981: 15). A. o. montivagus was named after Latin montivagus (wandering over the mountains), in allusion to the habitat of this subspecies” (Schwartz 1981: 19). A. o. palloris was named after Latin palloris (paleness), in reference to the very pallid color of this population. The subspecific name is genitive singular” (Schwartz 1981: 16). |
