Comment | For illustrations see Mertens, 1939; Mertens, 1940; Cochran, 1941; Schwartz, 1968 b. Synonymy: Anolis brevirostris is listed as a synonym of A. distichus by BOULENGER (1885) but is now considered as a valid species. Anolis citrinellus COPE 1864 was previously considered a synonym of A. cybotes but moved to the synonymy of A. distichus by Köhler et al. 2019. Myers et al. 2020 were unable to diagnose “species” within A. distichus. Subspecies: GLOR & LAPORT 2012 elevated several subspecies to full species rank, including aurifer, dominicensis, favillarum, ignigularis, properus, ravitergum, and vinosus. Similarly, MacGuigan et al. 2017 found that A. distichus is comprised of numerous distinct populations that likely warrant recognition as distinct species. However, neither were able to provide diagnostic phenotypic traits to distinguish the candidate species identified on the basis of genomic differentiation. MacGuigan et al. also found that “dewlap color is not by itself a reliable diagnostic trait in the A. distichus complex, and perhaps in anoles more broadly”. Note however, that the distichus complex has always been recognized as the major exception to the idea that dewlap color variation relates to reproductive isolation. Mertens 1939 also described A. d. albidogularis which is not mentioned in the recent literature. Species group: Ctenonotus distichus species group (fide NICHOLSON et al. 2012). Diet: a large percentage of the diet of this species (50-80%) consists of ants (Lucas et al. 2023). |
Etymology | Named after Latin distichus, a, um, ‘which has two ranks’. |
