DiagnosisDiagnosis and definition (n=4). Apostolepis breviceps is diagnosed from all congeners as well as all other elapomorphines by the third supralabial entering the orbit. The new species is further defined by the following characteristics: (1) the snout is pointed in dorsal view and in profile (note that the tip of the snout is depressed in the holotype, Fig. 1), and the length of the rostral visible dorsally is greater than its distance to the frontal; (2) five supralabials are present; (3) the preocular is separated from the nasal by contact between the second supralabial and the prefrontal; (4) temporals are absent; (5) infralabials 1- 3 contact a single pair of chinshields; (6) males have 225-229 ventrals and 30-39 (possibly 40) subcaudals; (7) dorsally, the anterior snout scales have light blotches, but the parietals are uniformly black; (8) the supralabial blotch is small and covers supralabial 4 and the edges of 3 and/or 5; (9) the black nuchal collar extends for 6-7.5 vertebrals; a white nuchal collar is ab sent; (10) stripes are absent except for a broken vertebral pinstripe; (11) the dorsal ground coloration is brick red; (12) the caudal band overlaps 6-10 subcaudals, and the terminal scale is almost entirely cream (yellow in life); (13) the chin, gular, and preventral regions are black or mostly black with some cream spots or edging of scales.
