Type locality: “Addur” [= Xuddor, Oddur], BAkool Region, S Somalia, 04°07’ N, 43°53’ E, elevation ca. 500 m.

TypesHolotype: MZUT (= MSNTO) R-3484, adult female 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus). A colubroid genus with diacranterian dentition, 13 15 maxillary teeth followed, after a diastema, by 3 4 enlarged, non-grooved teeth; absence of posterior hypapophyses; nasal shield divided with an interior flap or valve; eye of moderate size with round pupil; dorsal scales smooth, lacking apical pits, arranged long- itudinally in 19 rows at midbody, reducing to 15 posteriorly; cloacal shield divided.

Diagnosis. The generic diagnosis identifies the species. Additional characters include: head feebly distinct from neck, body short, robust and cylindrical; rostral concave ventrally; internasals and prefrontals with rounded borders; frontal with nearly parallel lateral borders; 146 ventrals (Dowling method) and 46/45 paired subcaudals; 8 supralabials with 4th and 5th entering the orbit and seventh the largest; 1 preocular and 2 postoculars; temporals 1 2; 9 infralabials with first four contacting anterior genials and fifth the largest; tail short (17% total length). 
CommentType species: Aprosdoketophis andreonei WALLACH, LANZA & NISTRI 2010 is the type species of the genus Aprosdoketophis WALLACH, LANZA & NISTRI 2010. 
EtymologyNamed after Franco Andreone, Italian herpetologist.

The genus has been named after the two Greek words “aproskoketos” = unexpected and “ophis” = serpent, snake.
