DistributionFrance (Corsica), Italy (Sardinia: Limbara Mts., Gennargentu Mts.)

Type locality: Corsica

ferrerae: N Sardinia

paessleri: Sardinia (Mt. Limbara) (RIMPP 1979); Type locality: Limbara-Gebirge, Nord-Sardinien (MERTENS & MÜLLER 1940)

sardoa: Sardinia (Gennargentu Mountains); Type locality: Punta Paolina, Gennargentu, Sardinia.
Reproductionoviparous
TypesType: MRSN (= MSNTO) R12
Type: MRSN (= MSNTO) R2125 [sardoa]
Holotype: SMF 22086, male [paessleri]
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Lizards possessing the following features found only in a minority of other Lacertini: medial loop of clavicle always interrupted behind, outer edge of parietal scale extending to lateral border of parietal table posteriorly and sometimes anteriorly, one postnasal scale, usually five upper labial scales in front of subocular, dorsal colouring without longitudinal stripes or series of spots and more or less reticulate even in young. Other more widely distributed features among Lacertini include: head and body often strongly depressed and supraocular osteoderms fenestrated in adults, frequently nine premaxillary teeth, usual number of presacral vertebrae in males 26, inscriptional ribs often present, tail brightly coloured in hatchlings, hemi- penial microornamentation of hook-shaped spines (from Arnold et al. 2007: 37).
CommentType species: Lacerta reticulata Bedriaga, 1881 is the type species of the genus Archaeolacerta Mertens, 1921 [=Archaeolacerta bedriagae (Camerano, 1885)].

Synonymy: Lacerta bedriagae tinettoi TADDEI 1949 is a synonym or subspecies of Podarcis muralis fide Gruschwitz & Böhme 1986: 176.

Subspecies: Archaeolacerta bedriagae paessleri (MERTENS 1927) is of doubtful validity (fide SINDACO & JEREMCENKO 2008); same for tinettoi. The validity of A. b. sardoa, A. b. paessleri, and A. b. ferrerae is not supported by genetic (Salvi et al., 2009, 2010) nor by morphological data (Salvi et al., 2008).
EtymologyNamed after Jacques von Bedriaga (1854-1906), Russian-born herpetologist.
