Atheris subocularis has been treated as a synonym of A. squamigera by many authors but was revived by LAWSON et al. (2001).

Habitat: fully arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018). 
EtymologyNamed after Latin (sub- "below or under" + oculāris "of or pertaining to the eyes" from Latin oculus = “eye”. The name is a bit misleading as there are no suboculars in this species.
