Etymology | The species name naranjicaudus is from the Arabic for "orange" and the Latin for "tail". The species name needs to be brevicauda, according to ICZN Article 34.2.1 which states that the gender of a noun in apposition must not be changed to agree in gender with the generic name, The Latin noun for tail is cauda and of female gender. For further explanations and examples see Böhme & Denzer (2019). However, Article 32.5.1 states that incorrect transliteration or Latinization, or use of an inappropriate connecting vowel, are not to be considered inadventent errors. Hence, the decision by the original authors to use "caudus" as a noun, whether or not it is correct Latin, stands (Glenn Shea, pers. comm., 9 May 2021). |
