Type locality: „Küste von Guinea", (= Ghana) [lineatus lineatus]

TypesHolotype: ZMB 1820, a 1045 mm specimen. 
Diagnosis 
CommentSubspecies: Bothrophthalmus lineatus brunneus (GÜNTHER 186 hs been elevated to species level although its status is controversial (GOSSMANN et al. 2002, HUGHES 2000).

Distribution: not listed for Togo by Segniagbeto et al. 2012. Not in Gabon, where it is replaced by B. brunneus (O. Pauwels, pers. comm., 25 April 2019). Distribution: Not in Equatorial Guinea fide SÁNCHEZ-VIALAS et al. 2022 (where only B. brunneus occurs). For a map of the genus see Tiutenko et al. 2022: 258 (Fig. 12).

Type species: Elaphis (Bothophthalmus) lineatus PETERS 186 is the type species of the genus Bothrophthalmus PETERS 186. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin “linea”, meaning stripe or line.
