Type species: Thanatophis montanus POSADO-ARANGO 1889 is the type species of the genus Thanatophis POSADO-ARANGO 1889, now a synonym of Bothrops and Bothriechis. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin “punctatus” (feminine pūnctāta) meaning "spotted" or "pointed". It is a reference to color pattern of the species.
