Type species: Agama cristatella KUHL 1820 is the type species of the genus Bronchocela KAUP 1827: 619.

Bronchocela intermedia PETERS & DORIA 1878 is a junior homonym of B. intermedia BERTHOLD 1842.

The Bronchocela cristatella mentoned in ter Borg (2005) is probably B. jubata (ter Borg 2007).

Diagnosis. A variable species of 70.8 - 114.0 mm SVL (in examined material, mean = 88.77, n = 64, maximal SVL 120 mm; Diong and Lim, 1998) and a long tail ratio = 295 - 394 (336.02, n = 50). 8 - 10 supralabials and 7 - 12 infralabials. Tympanum large, more than half diameter of orbit, often dusky colored. Canthus rostralis sharp, a series of 3 - 5 small erect, compressed scales behind supraciliary edge forming a small longitudinal crest. No enlarged scales between tympanum and eye. Gular sac small in males and sometimes absent in females, covered with small keeled scales, smaller than ventrals. Nuchal crest scales small, erect, flattened and directed upwards, longest shorter than diameter of orbit. Dorsal crest formed as a serrated ridge continues nuchal crest or absent. Body scales mucronate, keeled, homogenous in 53 - 95 midbody scales (mean = 71.58, n = 55), 4 - 10 uppermost scale row next to dorsal crest pointing upward, 0 - 4 rows directed parallel, others scale rows downwards. Ventrals 1 - 5 times larger than dorsals, strongly keeled. It can be distinguished from other congeners by combination of short nuchal crest, 4 - 10 upper scale rows pointing upwards and 10 - 12 ventral scale rows.
